Deciphering Brazilian potential for investment
“Building specific knowledge will feel like play to you but will look like work to others”
- Naval Ravikant
This is a piece dedicated to relaunching I'm No Economist. Sure a few things are changing. But I can't tell how it will be, without telling about how it has been.
You know me, Leo Torres and I'm No Economist. I came up with the idea of launching I'm No Economist in March 2022.
I did it because we were in a rocky economic scenario and I was looking for a way out and to protect myself financially.
If you've read I'm No Economist from the beginning, you may think I was a permabear. Well, judge me for trying to protect myself from an epidemic from my computer.
Then, I'm No Economist evolved to become a channel where I could keep learning, and share those learnings with interested people.
Turns out that what they say is true. Interested people are the most interesting. They think alike and usually act similarly too. I kept meeting more and more amazing people who were interested in I'm No Economist, and interesting to keep sharing ideas with.
In this process, I met people who quickly changed the way I think and helped me develop new perceptions and ways to do great work. I have been too lucky these past few months.
Now that I'm also learning from people with different perspectives, I realize I'm No Economist would be much more enriching for a wider number of people.
That is, rethinking I'm No Economist to serve a purpose that would gather people who have the same ethos and are willing to discuss their different perspectives openly.
The process to do this relaunch was intriguing, to say the least. It was a bit tiring and definitely fun as hell.
And it wouldn't be possible without the partnership with Natalia Vasconcellos, my new business partner - one of the people who helped me see things from a different perspective in many areas of life.
Going forward, those who will read I'm No Economist will participate in the debate.
Those who want to help build the foundations for a rich entrepreneurial, economic, and innovation ecosystem in Brazil. That's our new focus.
We will keep generating expert intelligence and strategic insights for the Brazilian investment market.
And we will be a loud voice helping decipher Brazilian potential for investment - globally—the #1 reason we'll keep writing in English.
I'm No Economist will issue 2 new editions:
1. Beyond Carnaval: delivered every Thursday at 06:09 am (BR time)
The newsletter offers concise reflections, digests, and highlights of the week's significant news within Brazil's investment and innovation landscape.
2. Open Zeitgeist: delivered every two weeks on Saturday at 06:09 am (BR time)
The Open Zeitgeist newsletter will provide a space for both Brazilian and “gringo” guests to share their perspectives about Brazilian investment opportunities.
Investors are closely looking for opportunities in our country. It will be our job to decipher Brazilian potential.
Welcome to edition #1 of Beyond Carnaval, by I'm No Economist.
Turbi raises an extra ~$9Mn phasing out of the asset-light model, summing up to the other $27Mn already raised at the beginning of the year. The plan is to raise margins and improve unit economics by a factor of 5x. Smart move in the age of efficiency.
Web Summit is 99% AI, except for the 34,000+ participants who are very real.
By unanimity, Brazil was accepted as the new member of the Eureka Network, the world’s biggest network for international cooperation in R&D and innovation, present in over 47 countries.
Fiscal targets change once again, less than a year from the last target setting, in August 2023. We're going from a 1% surplus goal to a 0,25%. Not a great selling point for investors.
Freedom of speech is being attacked in Brazil. Our #1 advice: don't be stupid and take sides at face value. Our #2 advice, go with the side where freedom is being protected. The problem with advice #2 is that it can be both sides depending on the way you look. More on this on Open Zeitgeist next Saturday, here on I'm No Economist - stay tuned.
